Goldfish And Koi Fish Pond
If you would like to bring some aquatic life to your garden pond, add goldfish or koi. There are rainbows of color in the many
different types of goldfish and Koi that you can add to your garden pond. Koi, a carp family member, can also be trained to take food right from your hand.
Goldfish are a hardy fish and don’t require much attention. The larger size goldfish will eat insects
and some plant life.
A good rule of thumb to use when adding fish is to allow one square foot of space for every inch of fish that
you add, but with the sizable growth of koi, it is better to measure their
habitat by 1 – 12 inch koi to 100 square feet of pond space.
Koi will need more filtration because of their size. Fish need space to thrive and it will add more of an elegant look to your water
garden. Don’t forget that a small pond will limit the number of fish that it can hold. Koi get quite large no matter what the size of your pond. The site that you choose will need an inward
slope to be able to handle the concentrate of fish in your pond. This will allow fish waste to gravitate
toward the bottom and then be absorbed and purified by your fish pond filter.
Koi limit the amount of plant life in your pond because they will eat some of the plant life. Koi will need some protection from the sun
so consider keeping your plants down to a minimum.
Fish need oxygen in the water to survive. Oxygen levels in the water may be dangerously low if you notice your fish gulping for air at the surface. It is recommended that you test the quality
of water you are using for plants and fish. High chlorine content in public tap water can be fatal to fish
Salt relieves stress and helps in medicating fish from many diseases. By adding eight pounds
of salt to every 1000 gallons of water in your pond, you will help in
maintaining a fishes’ blood salt level. With koi, your best defense against disease is to minimize your fish
population. A weekly refreshing of about 10 percent of the water volume will
help keep down maintenance. If it rains, Mother Nature has replenished the fresh water for you.
