Water Garden And Pond Supply
Even though it is beautiful to sit
and look at for hours, at some point in time you will have to give your garden
pond a little care and attention. It is
good to have some equipment on hand to make it as simple as possible. A good water hose with enough length to
reach your garden pond will allow you to replenish water as needed. During the summer months, evaporation will
account for water loss up to an inch a week.
Leaf skimmers are needed during the fall months. You will need to have one that will stretch out at least half the length
of your garden pond. This will help eliminate the stretching and reaching to get those hard to reach leaves and
debris that linger in the middle of the pond.
Leaf netting provides the protection your garden pond needs to keep out leaves and
debris day and night. When purchasing
leaf netting, make sure that you are getting one that does not have too big of
openings to allow smaller debris to slip through. Leaf netting is stretched over the perimeter over your pond. It can be kept slightly elevated by using
2x4’s or beach balls. Keeping it
slightly elevated will help protect your plant life and will also give your
fish some access to the surface without getting caught within the netting. You will need to secure it to the outer
edges with bricks or stakes.
If you live in a climate where the temperature can cause freezing, you may want to
keep a pond de-icer on hand for the seasonal weather. Pond de-icers will help open the surface to allow trapped toxic
gases to escape. To avoid overworking your pond pump and filter, you may want to drain your pond during these months.
To help avoid algae buildup, you will need to have a very good water quality test
kit on hand. If you notice a change in
your pond, a quick test of the water can help provide an easy diagnosis to the
problem. Most water test kits will allow you to test the water for ammonia, nitrate, and chlorine levels and PH balance.
A good pond vacuum will keep cleanup simple. Dirt and debris can settle on the bottom of your water garden. A wet-dry shop vac will do the same thing as
long as the pool is drained. You will have the option of choosing different size sweep heads to pull up small and large debris.
A pond repair kit will aide you with any type of punctures or slits. Some kits contain an adhesive back repair
patch which is good for smaller punctures or tears. Seam tape is also available for longer tears.
